The Development of Silver Spur Resort

Silver Spur is a 35-acre resort campground that specializes in helping people create memorable experiences, shared with the ones they love.
Just an hour outside of Dallas, the Resort is an ideal venue for an overnight getaway, a dream wedding weekend, or a fun-filled family vacation in Canton, Texas.
We celebrated the Grand Opening of Durham’s Roost on July 6, 2016, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and “meet & greet” with members of the Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce. Just a few short years later, we have blossomed into a resort destination that serves both the local community and travelers alike. Here is the story of how the Silver Spur Resort has developed over the years!
2016: Opening Durham’s Roost
Durham’s Roost was the first phase of the Resort. Since its opening, we’ve enjoyed hosting guests visiting First Monday Trade Days, church groups, family reunions, bridal parties, and more! Guests LOVE the cleanliness and comfy beds!
Although Durham’s Roost began as a bed & breakfast, this ranch house is now available as a whole house rental. It is most commonly used during wedding weekends for families of the bride and groom and bridal parties. Small groups appreciate the privacy of the house, as it sits at the top of the resort with private parking and a patio overlooking the Resort. Although separate from the campground lodging, guests can still enjoy the resort amenities and activities before returning to all the comforts of home at Durham’s Roost.
2017: A Rustic Barn and Cozy Cabins
The Barn at the Silver Spur Resort was the 2nd phase of the Resort. In November 2016, we laid the foundation for our beautiful rustic barn. By September 2017 we hosted our first wedding reception at the Resort! Since then, we’ve been lucky enough to host numerous weddings and other celebrations here at the Barn ❤️
The kind reviews from our couples and their friends and families even allowed us the opportunity to win The Knot Best of Weddings 2019 award in the venue category! To date, we’ve won 4 consecutive Best of Weddings and a Hall of Fame award from The Knot, and two Couple Choice awards from Wedding Wire.
During that time, we started construction on additional lodging options for our guests. By October 2017, we added 2 cabins to our inventory. Today, we offer 8 deluxe cabins, 5 energy-efficient camping cabins, and 2 tiny homes to our selection of great lodging options! (Not to worry, these cozy cabins offer the same comfortable beds as Durham’s Roost, so you know you’ll get a great night’s sleep!) Here’s a fun quiz to see which lodging option is right for you!
2018: A Busy Year for Building
In March 2018 we started the construction of our “mystery building”. Soon after, we revealed that The Escape Room at the Silver Spur Resort would open in October. Guests tell us they are impressed by how realistic our rooms are, and how much fun they have (whether they escape or not) 😎 You can read reviews on Trip Advisor to see why we are ranked one of the top things to do in Canton, Texas!
2018 continued to be a busy year for us. We worked hard that year to prepare our RV park to open by the beginning of 2019. This was a much later timeframe than originally anticipated. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate with us and delayed our construction plans.
Our first campers came towards the end of February, with 20 open RV spaces for the March First Monday Weekend. To date, we have about 70 spaces poured. Once fully completed, the Canton KOA will have about 90 spaces including back-in, pull-through, and patio campsites.
We also established our non-profit, Van Zandt First Responders Fund in 2018! The mission of the Van Zandt First Responders Fund is to provide necessary assistance to the county’s First Responders when tragedy strikes, or extreme family needs arise. It is also a goal to help supplement unfunded equipment purchases to add safety and effectiveness to the operations of agencies within the county.
Our biggest fundraisers include First Responder’s Day, Daddy & Me and Mommy & Me dances, BBQ competitions, and Junior Firefighter Camp. Come out and support your local first responders by participating in these fun local events!
2019: The First Brewery in Canton Opens
In April, we were honored to be selected as “Busines of the Year” by the members of the Canton Texas Chamber of Commerce. We were so excited and humbled to have received this honor. We have such an amazing group of business owners in our Chamber! Our deepest thanks go to everyone who voted for us!
We were also proud to discover Silver Spur Resort was named County Line Magazine’s Best RV Park of the Upper East Side of Texas for 2019! As a developing park, and brand new KOA, this was a great honor!
And finally, the long-awaited Q & Brew restaurant and brewery opened on July 1, 2019! Resort guests and Canton locals alike came out to try the newest restaurant in town and share their favorite food items and reviews of their experience. The cowboy stuffers, our version of stuffed jalapeños, became a quick favorite along with our brisket tacos.
Shortly after, in November of 2019, we finally received our brewpub license. This officially made us the Q & Brew the first brewery in Canton, Texas. Our brewmaster keeps it fresh and different and we are confident our brewhouse will keep you coming back!
Today, you can also find us at the beer gardens at First Monday Trade Days! Our team is set up at several locations on the Trade Days grounds to serve you delicious craft beer brewed right here in Canton, Texas.

2020: Glamping Comes to Canton KOA!
Heading into 2020 on a high note, we had BIG plans for glamping options at Canton KOA! Our tiny houses were a great start to the creative lodging options we would offer. But, we were ready to take it next level! We wanted to give guests a unique option when camping in East Texas, and knew that our newest plan for the resort would fit right into our theme of “Ranch Life with a Luxury Flair”.
Imagine life in the old west when you stay in a Conestoga Wagon! We brought in four covered wagons that are just as unique as they are comfortable. We call it, roughing it in style! These wagons are tucked away in the back of the resort to give campers a unique pioneer experience. Guests learn what it must have been like to stay in a covered wagon, (while still having access to modern amenities)! These wagons are growing in popularity with families, small groups, and those with an adventurous spirit excited to try something new.

2021-2022: Treehouse Glamping & New Amenities
Coming out of 2020 was uncertain, but we were optimistic. Families started to travel again, and camping became a popular choice, allowing people to enjoy the outdoors and get away in a less crowded environment.
In spite of navigating the ups and downs of running a business after the height of a pandemic, 2021 proved to be a year that allowed us to re-focus our energy on planning new additions to enhance the guest experience.
We entered 2022, with a “word of the year”, AND introduced our newest glamping addition to Silver Spur Resort’s lodging choices. Our Treehouse!
We’ve taken the camping experience to new heights with our first Treehouse! The treehouse is the newest addition to the glamping choices offered at Silver Spur Resort. It’s perfect for those looking for something different on their next family trip. Once completed, our Treehouse Village will offer 4 unique treehouses to choose from.
Lodging wasn’t the only area of expansion during this time. 2022 was the year our team really focused on enhancing the guest experience. That meant adding to our growing list of amenities!
Guests can now challenge their fellow campers to an exciting game of sand volleyball! Or maybe you want to test your skills on the giant chessboard. Both are fun additions to the plethora of outdoor games sprinkled around the park!
We want to thank everyone for all the support you have shown us over the last 6 years! What began as a dream of a bed & breakfast and glamping, has blossomed into the resort camping destination you enjoy today. But we aren’t done yet! There’s still plenty of work to do around here, to complete the vision we have for the Resort.
